Start With Your Bar and Training Volume

Before comparing grip materials, look at the bars you actually train on. This matters more than most athletes realize.

Powder-Coated Bars

Powder-coated pull-up bars can create substantial friction, particularly when the surface is rough, heavily textured, or worn from years of use. That additional friction may feel secure, but it can also increase the amount of force transferred into your palm and your grips.

Chalk: More Is Not Always Better

Chalk absorbs moisture and can improve your connection to certain surfaces, but dumping half the chalk bucket onto your grips is not automatically an upgrade.

Excess chalk can combine with sweat and contamination from the bar to create unpredictable buildup.
