How to Replace a Stinger Rope Cable
A frayed cable doesn't mean a new rope. Here's when to replace your Stinger cable, which replacement to pick, how to swap it, and how to make the next one last longer.
Your double-unders were finally flowing, and then the rope started to feel different. A little kink near the handle. The coating flaking on one side. Then a crack where the cable keeps slapping the floor. The handles and bearings are fine. It's the cable that wore out.
That's normal. The cable is the part of any speed rope that takes the beating, especially on concrete. The good news: learning how to replace a Stinger rope cable takes a few minutes, and RBST sells replacement cables for $7.99.
This guide covers the RBST Stinger Speed Rope ($54.95), which comes with two cables (red 2.0 mm and black 3.0 mm) and adjusts with no cutting required. Still choosing a rope? Read Stinger vs Stinger-X first.
The Quick Answer
Replace your cable when the coating cracks, frays or peels, or it kinks for good. Order a red 2 mm or black 3 mm Stinger replacement cable ($7.99 each). Remove the old cable from each handle, feed the new cable in following the instructions that came with your rope, set the length (top of the cable between sternum and armpits), and secure it. Jump on rubber or a mat so it lasts longer.
When to Replace Your Cable
Cracked coating
Once the coating cracks, the cable underneath wears fast.
Fraying or exposed wire
Replace immediately. It can snap and it will sting.
Permanent kinks
A kinked cable won't turn smoothly and throws off your timing.
Before a competition
A fresh cable (and a spare in your bag) removes one variable.
Stinger Replacement Cables
| Cable | Price | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black 3 mm | $7.99 | More feedback, slightly slower | Learning double-unders, longer sets |
| Red 2 mm | $7.99 | Lighter, quicker | Consistent double-unders, faster turnover |
Stinger-X owners: only the red 2 mm cable fits the Stinger-X. The black 3 mm cable fits the original Stinger only.
How to Replace the Cable
Remove the old cable. Open the cable attachment on each handle as shown in your rope's instructions and pull the old cable out.
Check the handles. Spin each bearing. Wipe off dust or grit before fitting the new cable.
Feed in the new cable. Thread one end into the first handle and secure it.
Set the length. Thread the other end, stand on the middle with feet together, pull the handles up, and set the top of the cable between your sternum and armpits.
Secure and test. Tighten everything, then do a few sets of singles and double-unders before you trim any excess.

Make Your Next Cable Last
Jump on rubber flooring or a mat; concrete and rough surfaces wear cables fast. Coil the rope loosely in its bag. Inspect regularly. And wear shoes. A fast steel cable stings on bare skin.
Learning on 3 mm, Racing on 2 mm
The Stinger's two-cable setup lets you learn on the 3 mm and move to the 2 mm as your timing improves. When you're linking double-unders consistently and want a competition-style, cut-to-fit rope, look at the Stinger-X ($59.95). More in Do Speed Ropes Improve Double Unders?

Stinger Cable FAQs
When should I replace my jump rope cable?
When the coating cracks, frays or peels, the cable kinks permanently, or the wire shows through. A damaged cable can snap or sting.
How much is a Stinger replacement cable?
$7.99 each at the time of writing, in red 2 mm or black 3 mm.
Which cable should I choose, 2 mm or 3 mm?
3 mm gives more feel and a slightly slower turn, good for learning. 2 mm is lighter and quicker once your double-unders are consistent.
Does the Stinger come with two cables?
Yes. The Stinger ships with a red 2.0 mm and a black 3.0 mm cable.
Do I need to cut the Stinger cable?
The Stinger is adjustable with no cutting required. Some athletes trim excess once the length is dialed in.

Why does my cable keep wearing out?
Concrete, asphalt and rough surfaces wear cables fast. Jump on rubber flooring or a mat.
How do I store my rope?
Coil it loosely in its bag and avoid tight kinks.
Should I keep a spare cable?
Yes, especially before a competition. At $7.99 a spare is cheap insurance.
