Best Knee Sleeves for HYROX: Rules, Thickness and Fit
Are knee sleeves allowed in HYROX? Yes. Here's what the 2026–27 rulebook actually says, which RBST sleeve suits 8 km of running plus eight stations, how they should fit, and how to test them before race day.
HYROX is a strange event to pick knee sleeves for. You'll run eight 1 km segments, push and pull sleds, row, do burpee broad jumps, carry kettlebells, and then grind through 100 m of sandbag lunges and a set of wall balls near the end. A sleeve that feels perfect at the lunge station can feel hot and heavy by the fifth run. A sleeve that disappears on the runs might feel like nothing when the sandbag hits your shoulders.
This guide is our complete HYROX knee sleeve reference. It now includes our former post, "Are Knee Sleeves Allowed in HYROX?", so the rules answer and the buying advice live together. We quote the official rulebook directly, use only facts from our own product pages, and make no medical claims. Sleeves can add compression, warmth and a secure feel. They don't replace fitness, pacing or station skill.
The Quick Answer
Yes, knee sleeves are allowed in HYROX. The 2026–27 HYROX singles rulebook lists knee sleeves first among permitted items. If you wear them, you must wear or carry them from the start to the finish of your race, and you can't hand them to or receive them from anyone.
For most athletes, the best HYROX sleeve is 5mm Gen 2 ($49.00), a balance of support and mobility for running plus stations. Choose knitted ($29.00) if you run hot or want the lightest option, and 7mm Gen 2 ($55.00) only if you've tested it in full race simulations and tolerate the heat.
Key takeaways
- Knee sleeves are explicitly permitted in the HYROX singles rulebook.
- Start-to-finish rule: whatever you start with, you keep on or carry until you finish.
- No handoffs. Passing gear to or from anyone counts as outside assistance.
- Anything not explicitly listed is prohibited unless the Race Director gives written permission before the start.
- 5mm is the default HYROX choice; knitted is the lightweight option; 7mm is for athletes who've tested the heat.
- Size by the RBST chart: thigh 4 in above the kneecap. Don't automatically size down.
- Never race in brand-new sleeves. Test them in full simulations first.
Are knee sleeves allowed in HYROX?
Yes. Section 10.1, Clothing and Accessories, of the 2026–27 HYROX singles rulebook lists the items racers may use or wear during the race. Knee sleeves are first on that list, followed by gloves (not grips), weightlifting belts, wristbands, hydration packs, prescribed asthma inhalers or similar, and respiratory devices.
| Rule | What it says | What it means for your sleeves |
|---|---|---|
| Permitted items | Knee sleeves are listed as permitted | Conventional knee sleeves are allowed |
| Start to finish | If you use, wear or carry a listed item, you must do so from the start to the finish of your race | No putting sleeves on halfway or taking them off to run faster |
| No handoffs | Items may not be handed to or received from anyone else; doing so is outside assistance and may result in disqualification | A friend can't pass you sleeves, and you can't share a pair |
| Unlisted items | Anything not explicitly listed is prohibited by default unless the Race Director gives written permission before the start | Braces or unusual supports need approval in advance |
| Prohibited items | Confiscated and recoverable at Customer Service after you finish | Don't risk unlisted gear on race day |
Summarized from the HYROX 2026–27 Rulebook (Singles), section 10.1, checked November 1, 2026. Rules can change, and doubles, relay and elite formats may have their own documents. Always read the current rulebook and athlete briefing for your event.
What about knee braces?
The rulebook lists knee sleeves, not braces. Hinged or rigid supports are not on the permitted list, so treat them as unlisted. If you need one, contact your local HYROX customer support team before race day and ask to be connected with the Race Director for written permission.

How sleeves feel across a HYROX race
Remember the start-to-finish rule: whatever sleeves you start with stay on, or with you, for every segment below. That's why the choice has to work for the whole race, not just your favorite station.
| Segment | What sleeves do there | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| 8 × 1 km runs | Mostly along for the ride | Heat and bulk; thick sleeves can feel heavy late in the race |
| SkiErg and row | Little effect | Bunching behind the knee at full knee bend on the rower |
| Sled push and pull | Warmth and a snug feel | Sliding as you drive hard; fit matters |
| Burpee broad jumps | Coverage when you drop to the floor | Repeated knee bend; sleeves must stay centered |
| Farmers carry | Little effect | Nothing specific |
| Sandbag lunges | Compression and a secure feel through repeated deep knee bends | Sliding under sweat; test in long lunge sets |
| Wall balls | Warmth and snug feel through repeated squats | Depth; sleeves must allow a full squat |

5mm vs knitted vs 7mm for HYROX
Choose 5mm Gen 2 if…
You want one pair that works for both the running and the stations. You like a clear, supportive feel on lunges and wall balls but don't want thick neoprene on every run. This is where most athletes should start.
Choose knitted if…
You run hot, you race in warm venues, or you dislike the feel of neoprene. You want gentle compression and coverage, not structure. Knitted is also the lowest-cost option at $29.00 per pair.
Choose 7mm Gen 2 if…
You're a strength-biased athlete who already trains in 7mm, you've done full HYROX simulations in it, and your run splits didn't suffer. If you haven't tested it over a full race distance, don't make race day the first time.
Gen 2 vs older pairs
If you already own an older RBST pair, our size guide uses the same chart for Gen 1 and Gen 2 sleeves. Race in whichever pair you've trained in most and that still holds its position through a long lunge set. Worn-out material that slides under sweat is a reason to replace the pair before race season, not on race morning.
Or skip sleeves entirely
Plenty of athletes race HYROX without sleeves. If you've never trained in them, race day is not the time to start. Sleeves are optional, and the start-to-finish rule means you're committed once you begin.
How HYROX sleeves should fit
RBST uses one chart for 5mm, 7mm and knitted sleeves. Straighten and relax your leg and measure your thigh circumference 4 inches above the center of your kneecap.
| Size | Thigh 4 in above kneecap (in) |
|---|---|
| S | 14–15 |
| M | 15–17 |
| L | 17–19 |
| XL | 19–21 |
From the RBST size guide, checked November 1, 2026.
Follow the chart rather than automatically sizing down. HYROX is long, and sleeves feel tighter as you heat up and sweat. The right fit is snug and secure, stays put through walking lunges, allows a full wall-ball squat, and never causes numbness or tingling. Full method: How to Size Knee Sleeves.
How to test sleeves before race day
Wear them for full pieces
Run, sled, lunge and wall-ball in the same pair. Short station drills don't tell you how they'll feel after 5 km.
Do at least one full simulation
Run a full or near-full race simulation in your race sleeves. Note how they feel on the last two runs.
Check fit after sweat
Sleeves that stay put when dry can slide when soaked. Watch them during long lunge sets.
Compare splits
If your run times drop off in thick sleeves, try 5mm or knitted in your next simulation.
Lock it in
Pick your pair at least a couple of weeks out and stop experimenting. Race week is for rest, not gear tests.
Re-read the rulebook
Read the current rulebook and athlete briefing for your event in race week. Briefings beat gym folklore.
Race-day sleeve checklist
- Sleeves you've trained in, washed and fully dried.
- Put them on before you enter the start corral, centered on the kneecap.
- Plan to keep them on for the whole race. No mid-race swaps or handoffs.
- Pack any other permitted gear you trained with, such as a belt or wristbands.
- If you're unsure about a brace or unusual support, get written Race Director permission before the start.
- Bring a dry bag for sweaty sleeves after the finish.
Using sleeves through a HYROX training block
Don't save sleeves only for race day, but don't live in thick sleeves for every easy run either. A practical pattern: wear your race sleeves for HYROX-style mixed sessions and full simulations, use lighter sleeves or none on easy aerobic days, and keep heavier sleeve habits for strength days if those are separate. That way race day feels familiar, and you stay comfortable training without them too.
If sleeves are covering up a sharp pain pattern, that's a conversation for a coach or medical professional, not a gear decision. Gear can support comfort. It doesn't diagnose.
Doubles, relay and travel races
The rules quoted above come from the singles rulebook. Doubles, relay and elite formats can publish their own documents, so read the one that matches your division. The practical advice is the same in every format: each athlete should race in a personally fitted pair, and you shouldn't plan on sharing or passing sleeves between partners. If you're traveling to a race, pack sleeves where they can air out after any shakeout session, and bring a spare dry bag. Arriving with sleeves that are still damp from Saturday's training is an easy way to start Sunday's race uncomfortable.
Who HYROX sleeves are for, and who they're not for
Good fit
Athletes who already like sleeves for lunges and squats, strength-biased racers, and anyone who's tested sleeves in simulations and wants the same feel on race day.
Think twice
First-timers who've never trained in sleeves, athletes who overheat easily (try knitted first), and anyone hoping a sleeve will fix a pain problem.
Common HYROX sleeve mistakes
- Racing in brand-new sleeves. Break them in during HYROX-style sessions.
- Choosing 7mm without testing the heat. It can feel great at stations and heavy on the runs.
- Planning a mid-race change. The start-to-finish rule doesn't allow it.
- Sharing with a partner. Handoffs count as outside assistance. Wear your own fitted pair.
- Showing up with an unlisted brace. Get written permission first.
- Sizing down for more support. Follow the chart; a long race makes tight sleeves worse.
Expert tips
- Test sleeves on your longest simulation, not your shortest one.
- Pull sleeves on before your warm-up jog so you can re-center them before the start.
- If your venue runs warm, knitted can be the difference between comfortable and cooked.
- Keep a second pair for training so your race pair is fresh, clean and dry.
- Pair sleeves with a belt only if you've trained with both together.
- Note the pair, size and splits in your training log so race-day choices are based on data.
Keep race sleeves fresh
Air-dry after every session, keep sleeves away from high heat, and don't leave them damp in a closed bag, especially when traveling to a race. Follow each product page's care notes and our How to Wash Knee Sleeves guide. For the full thickness breakdown, see the Ultimate Knee Sleeve Guide.
