How to Wash Knee Sleeves and Stop the Smell
Knee sleeves are usually the worst-smelling thing in your gym bag. Here's how to wash 5mm, 7mm and knitted sleeves without wrecking the fit, and the habits that keep the smell from coming back.
You open your gym bag on Monday and it hits you. The sleeves you wore on Saturday's squat day have been sitting in there, still damp, all weekend. Now the whole bag smells, and so does your car.
Knowing how to wash knee sleeves properly fixes most of that. Neoprene and Hypalon sleeves hold sweat, and a warm closed bag is perfect for bacteria. The fix isn't complicated: air them out, wash them gently, dry them fully, and keep heat away.
The steps below follow the care guidance on RBST knee sleeve product pages. The rule that overrides everything: follow the care label on your sleeves first. Different materials have different limits.
The Quick Answer
Take sleeves out of your bag right after training. To wash, turn them inside out, hand wash in cool water with a little mild detergent, rinse well, gently press out water, and air dry completely. No dryer, no high heat, no harsh chemicals. Wash every few sessions or whenever they smell, and never store them damp. Follow your sleeve's care label above all.
Washing Guide by Sleeve Type
| Sleeve | Material | Wash | Dry |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5mm Gen 2 ($49) | 5mm sleeve | Hand wash, cool water, mild detergent | Air dry, no dryer or direct heat |
| 7mm Gen 2 ($55) | 7mm Hypalon | Gentle, per care label, no harsh chemicals | Air dry fully, avoid heat |
| Knitted ($29) | Stretch knit | Per label; gentle cycle only if permitted | Avoid excessive heat |
| Gen 1 5mm / 7mm | Neoprene-style | Gentle, per care label | Air dry, avoid heat |
How to Hand Wash Knee Sleeves
Turn them inside out. Most sweat sits on the inside against your skin.
Cool water, mild detergent. Fill a sink or basin with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent.
Soak and work. Let them soak a few minutes, then squeeze and knead the material gently.
Rinse well. Leftover soap can irritate skin and hold odor.
Press, don't wring. Press water out or roll the sleeves in a towel. Hard twisting can stress seams.
Air dry completely. Hang them in a ventilated spot out of direct heat. Flip them right side out halfway through.
Never Do This
No tumble dryer. No radiator. No leaving them on a hot car dashboard. Heat breaks down neoprene, Hypalon and stretch fibers.
No bleach or harsh chemicals. Mild detergent is enough.
No storing damp. That's where the smell comes from.
How to Stop Knee Sleeve Smell
Air out every time
Pull sleeves out of your bag as soon as you get home, even if you're not washing them.
Wash on a schedule
Every few sessions, or after any very sweaty workout.
Dry fully
Dry inside and out before they go back in the bag.
Occasional soak
Many athletes do a short cool soak with a splash of white vinegar before washing. Test a small spot and check your label first.

When to Replace Your Sleeves
Lifespan depends on how often you train, how they fit, and how you clean them. Replace sleeves when the material is damaged, they lose compression, or they slide down and won't stay put. If they've gotten loose, check How Tight Should Knee Sleeves Be? and How to Size Knee Sleeves. Choosing a new pair? Compare 5mm vs 7mm.
Knee sleeves provide compression and warmth. They are not a medical device and do not replace a prescribed brace or professional treatment.
Knee Sleeve Washing FAQs
How do you wash neoprene knee sleeves?
Turn them inside out, hand wash in cool water with a small amount of mild detergent, rinse well, press out water (do not wring hard) and air dry completely. Always follow the care label first.
Can I put knee sleeves in the washing machine?
Check the care label. RBST recommends hand washing 5mm sleeves. For knitted sleeves, use a gentle cycle only if the label permits it, ideally in a laundry bag.
Can I put knee sleeves in the dryer?
No. Avoid tumble dryers, high heat and direct heat sources; heat can damage neoprene, Hypalon and stretch fabrics.
How do I get the smell out of knee sleeves?
Air them out immediately after training, wash them regularly, and dry them fully before storing. Many athletes also do an occasional soak in cool water with a little white vinegar before washing; test a small area first and follow the care label.
How often should I wash knee sleeves?
It depends on how much you sweat and train. A good rule is to air them out after every session and wash them every few sessions or whenever they smell.
Why do knee sleeves smell so bad?
Sweat and bacteria get trapped when sleeves stay damp in a closed gym bag.
Can I use bleach or fabric softener?
Avoid harsh chemicals. Mild detergent is enough.
How long do knee sleeves take to dry?
It varies with thickness and humidity. Thick 7mm sleeves take longer than knitted sleeves. Make sure they are fully dry inside and out before storing.
How do I wash 7mm Hypalon knee sleeves?
Follow the care label, use gentle cleaning methods, avoid harsh chemicals and excessive heat, and let them air dry fully.
Do knitted knee sleeves wash differently?
They are lighter and dry faster. Follow the care label; if machine washing is permitted, use a gentle cycle and avoid heat.
When should I replace my knee sleeves?
When the material is damaged, they lose compression, or they no longer stay in position.
Should I store knee sleeves in my gym bag?
Not when they are wet. Take them out after training and let them dry first.
Does washing reduce compression?
Gentle washing and air drying help preserve fit. Heat and harsh chemicals are what usually cause damage.
