Archive FAQ

When did the CrossFit Open begin?

The first CrossFit Open was held in 2011 as the opening online stage of the CrossFit Games season.

Why does the number of Open workouts change?

CrossFit sets the Open format each season. Recent seasons (2021–2025) have used three weeks; earlier seasons used five (2011 used six). We show counts only after a season is verified and imported.

What is the difference between Rx'd and Scaled?

Rx'd is the workout as written, with the published loads and movements. Scaled uses lighter loads and/or simpler movements published by CrossFit for that workout. Rx'd and Scaled scores are ranked separately.

What counts as a no-rep?

A rep that misses any part of the official movement standard for that workout, such as not reaching full extension or squatting above parallel. The official scorecard lists common no-reps, and it says the list is not exhaustive.

What is a tiebreak score?

A time you record at a set checkpoint. If two athletes have the same score, the better tiebreak time ranks higher. Some workouts, like 25.1, have no tiebreak.

Can I repeat an old CrossFit Open workout?

Yes, as training. Use the original season's standards and loads so your score is comparable, and note that 25.2 was an official repeat of 22.3.

When were Quarterfinals introduced?

Quarterfinals first appeared in the 2021 season. We'll only show stage tabs for a year after its stages are verified against official CrossFit pages.

Can beginners attempt historical Open workouts?

Many can, using the official Scaled or Foundations versions. RBST coaching tip: pick a load that lets you move well for the whole time cap.
